Springtime in the vineyard

After several weeks of rain, the sun is finally out and the vines are soaking it in. We had budbreak April 13th on one of the Chardonnay vines.

The remaining varieties are quite a ways behind the Chardonnay, but with warm weather in the forecast, we’re expecting everything to burst in the next week or so.

In the meantime, we’re busy getting ready for our spring planting. We’ll be putting in another 1000 vines this year, mostly Cabernet sauvignon and Viognier. The solar pumps are up and running, filling the ponds in preparation for spring watering after budbreak (and post-vineyard-tromping dog-cooling).

Once the new shoots are a couple inches in length, we’ll focus on shoot thinning, which establishes the canopy for the season and reduces the need for shoot removal and hedging during the summer. This is definitely the beginning of one of the prettiest times of year in the vineyard!

Yes! It is amazing every time – I feel the same way about my garden seedlings too – always like a surprise!
