Irrigation
20-30% of our irrigation water is solar pumped. We use solar direct pumping to eliminate the use of batteries. When it is sunny our vines need water, and our pumps are working their hardest. Better wines are produced from deficit irrigated vines. We irrigate with low-pressure drip lines, and can very accurately apply water directly to the root zone to control growth, and minimize evaporation.
Waste
We compost all of our vine trimmings, grape must, stems, and pomace, re-applying it directly to the vines. This improves our soil, and reduces the amount of fertilizer brought in from outside the vineyard. We collect winery process water, settle and stabilize it to reduce BOD, and re-apply to vines it through our drip irrigation system.
HVAC
Our winery building and barrel storage areas are super-insulated, and heating/cooling is accomplished by a ground-source heat pump, the most efficient form of heating and cooling available. Our cellar is a concrete bunker dug into the hillside, offering stable temperatures year-round.
